Committee

Committee Structure

The committee meets once a fortnight for about an hour in the evening. You can get a place on the committee by being elected at a General Meeting. The society holds its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the end of the Spring Term. There will always be at least one committee member at all Wayfarers events. If you want to contact the committee at any point, use our 'contact us' form.

Current Committee

Dennis van Soest

Position:

President

Profile:

Hallo! I’m Dennis, the Wayfarers president. I am from the Netherlands and came over to the UK to do a PhD in Civil Engineering. My PhD is – of course – about walking! Particularly walking to public transport. And walking from public transport. Walking for life. For me, the Wayfarers is an amazing society to do some walking, meet many people, and a great way to explore more of the wonderful UK countryside, instead of just seeing the city of Birmingham. It's my second year in the society. As the president I try to keep the society running well!

Joe Milton

Position:

Treasurer

Profile:

Hey, I'm Joe and I will be your treasurer for the next year! It is a true honour to be Dennis' first lady too! I study Chemistry and I will be entering my third and final year. I make sure that we don't go bankrupt (hopefully ;) ) and keep everything nice and cheap for everyone else! I started doing lots of hiking halfway through secondary school and haven't stopped since. I joined Wayfarers from the start of university and have enjoyed getting more involved in the past year. It's a great society that caters to everyone's walking tastes and is great for international students to experience the UK with ease.

Joseph McGrory

Position:

Secretary

Profile:

Hello! I’m Joe, you already know me as the Wayfarers secretary but I’m also a 1st year physics student, book enthusiast and all round massive nerd. I’ve been walking forever and I’m a big ol’ country bumpkin so the Wayfarers is the perfect society for me to join to get me away from the metropolis that is Birmingham!

Sophia Anthony

Position:

Social Sec

Profile:

Hi, I’m Sophia, The Wayfarer’s social sec! I'm in charge of making sure we have fun socials amidst all the wild walking we do! Im a first year Geology student and so do a lot of outdoor fieldwork and walking as part of my course and couldn’t think of a better society to be in to compliment that! I’m a big fan of relaxed socials where everyone can chat and enjoy being in each others company and so I’m hoping to run that sort of thing during my time on committee, if you ever have any suggestions for socials please give me a message!

Annabel Ridsdale

Position:

Bookings Sec

Profile:

Hi I’m Annabel and I’m the Booking Secretary. I book our accommodation for weekend trips, so if you have anywhere you’d like us to stay, I’m the one to come to! I study Nursing with the aim to work with either children or older adults. I think that the wayfarers is a great way to be social through walks and the socials (even if you aren’t into the hikes).

Alice Hyde

Position:

Transport Sec

Profile:

Hi I'm Alice and I'm the transport secretary for Wayfarers this year. This means I organise minibuses and drivers for all our wonderful trips! I study medicine and am about to start my 3rd year. I have loved being a part of Wayfarers this year to escape Birmingham occasionally (I'm a country bumpkin really) and meet lots of different people. If you have any questions about transport or Wayfarers in general please don't hesitate to ask.

Chris Finch

Position:

Gear Sec

Profile:

Hey, I’m Chris, the Wayfarers gear sec. My job is to look after all the equipment we use for trips. I’m currently studying to be a teacher with the aim of teaching English and P.E when I’m done. Aside from hiking, the thing I like most about the society is the wide range of members who join. Many international students join as it’s a great – and cheap – way to see some of the most beautiful parts of the UK. There’s also a wide age range of people, from first year students to PHD mature students.

Helena Martin

Position:

Communications Sec

Profile:

Hey, I'm Helena the new Communications sec. I will be responsible for posting pictures of trips, organising leaders for the walks and answering any of your questions. I am currently studying medicine, although studying biomed for my third year. Wayfarers offers an opportunity to explore Birmingham and escape Med School on the weekends. It also allows me to meet people from other courses.
